DNA LABORATORY TESTING - NUTRIGENOMICS

Did you know that the interaction between your diet and lifestyle and your unique genetic code determines your overall health and well-being? This is called NUTRIGENOMICS.

Genetic variations unique to you determine how well your body metabolises the foods that you consume. Nutrigenomics is relevant to many aspects of health and determining your unique nutrigenomic profile facilitates the planning of personalised nutritional interventions to optimise your health.

DNA testing is becoming extremely popular; however, this needs to be approached with care and supported with expert knowledge.

For this reason, I only work with tests that profile adequately researched genetic markers that are then actionable through diet and lifestyle modifications.

The relationship between your genes and your health

Consideration of family history is an important element of your Nutritional Therapy assessment as certain health conditions have a genetic basis. However, we now know that we are far more than the product of our genes.

Our environment, diet and lifestyle all play a significant role in how our genes are activated and this then determines our overall health and well-being. Many health conditions are determined by multiple genes, however, having these genes does not mean that you will necessarily go on to develop a health condition.

The field of epigenetics explains that for many aspects of health, expression of a gene, or a set of genes, is determined by lifestyle factors. In other words, the choices that you make concerning nutrition and lifestyle plays a role in determining whether you express certain genes. Epigenetics means “on top of genetics”: I visualise this a bit like a piano keyboard whereby the notes represent the genes sitting there ready to be played, and your nutrition and lifestyle represent your fingers, deciding which notes are played/genes expressed.
